Vice President, R&D

Alexander M. Meystel
PhD, ENIMS
Dr. Meystel was trained as an Electrical Engineer, and his PhD dissertation was related to the transient processes in induction motors. Although he spent 17 years in industry, it did not preclude him from teaching at the Post Graduate School at ENIMS (Moscow, the former USSR). His first eight PhD students were involved in analysis of methods of design and control of machines with numerical control. So, his involvement with robotics predetermined his interest in Machine Intelligence, then in computers. In the capacity of Chief of the Department of Systems Analysis (1971-1976) he developed his first set of results in various kinds of text processing determined by the needs of engineering design.

While he was teaching Machine Intelligence at the University of Florida, he developed an Autonomous Mobile Robot for the U.S. Army (1980-84). He continued this endeavor at Drexel University where he has been a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1984. Dr. Meystel is one of the organizers of the IEEE movement on Intelligent Control. For the last 10 years he has worked in cooperation with NIST (Intelligent Systems Division). He has developed a number of advanced theoretical methods in the area of multiresolutional (multigranular, multiscale) systems.

He is the author of 17 books and about 300 scientific papers, an internationally known specialist in intelligent control, an invited lecturer, and the organizer of many international conferences.

Since 1995 he has initiated a number of research activities linked with linguistic methods applicable to intelligent systems. His results became a basis for the development of the system for Meaning-Oriented Analysis of Texts (MOATS). His results in intelligent control, semiotics, and text processing are the product of consistent intellectual evolution. Cognisphere is the apex of this evolution.
